Learn how to rest, recharge, & retreat in order to become the person your calling requires.
This weekend, I took the time to have my own mini-retreat. I got the idea from a conversation with my line sister, Helen (follow her podcast @fgsministries)about taking time away for a spiritual/creative retreat.
& so this weekend, I just took time away from work, school, & other activities….
& I just spent time with God & family, of course celebrating Resurrection Day!
& it was sooooo liberating!
Not only did I grow in my faith & learn more about myself during this weekend, but I also got A LOT of writing done and received revelation about where The Rough Draft is going.
Over the course of this weekend, instead of feeling pressured, I gained an overwhelming sense of contentment with where I was in life.
So many times, we get bombarded and pressured to keep up with what we think everyone else is doing.
ESPECIALLY, when we have made mistakes along the way, we feel like we have to play catch up.
Everyone else is moving forward with side businesses, blogs, YT channels, weddings, and babies, we can become discouraged into thinking “we’ll never get there”.
Instead of enjoying the time we have, TIME BECOMES A BURDEN.
& it becomes a burden because we feel like we just don’t have enough of it.
So, Instead of being proud of our accomplishments, we’re in this rush to achieve more & get to the next steps.
A few weeks ago on my IG story, I posted a sermon by Pastor Mike Todd titled The Pace of Grace, and I encourage everyone especially Millennials to go & check it out!
But it ties in perfectly with this post. We have to learn how to go at the pace that God has set for us. When we rush ahead of him, we will always feel depleted because we’re out of His rhythm for our lives.
Everyone’s on their grind. & there’s nothing wrong with that! On this blog, we talk a lot about striving and goal setting and putting action to the plans.
& we should be doing that!
Every day should be filled with purpose whether or not we’re “operating in our calling.”
But it takes a mature person to know when it’s time to sit down.
It takes a strong person to not give into the pressures of social media and understand when they need to slow down.
& our generation doesn’t want to do that. We’re either on one extreme or the other. We want to either rush ahead of God, or we’re completely stagnant & not moving AT ALL.
& after this weekend, I felt like I heard God say that April would be my month of rest. Not a month of idleness. But a month to detox, recharge, create, & allow God to pour into me & His vision for the next season.
& you might say…. Well that doesn’t sound like rest. That sounds like work.
& the truth is that a purpose-filled rest doesn’t mean you’re just chilling and letting life pass you by. It’s allowing yourself to take time away to regain peace, clarity, and take the necessary steps to becoming the person that God has specifically created YOU to be.
So, I encourage you to take inventory of your current day to day life.
Do you need to sit down?
Do you need to take some time to withdraw and regain your peace?
If you find yourself just running through the motions…
If you feel like you’re losing more and more of yourself as the days go by…
If you’re working hard every day, but still feeling like it’s not good enough…
If you can’t seem to take the time to break bad habits & you’re constantly going around in circles..
THEN the answer to that question is YES, it’s time for a retreat.
I know you may not want to hear that.
But you’re doing yourself and your purpose a disservice by constantly living from a place of defeat and depletion.
Some of you may just need a weekend, some of you may need 30 days, some of you may need an entire season…
Taking time away doesn’t require the approval of people. Taking time away is between you and God.
So if you’re ready to make a mature decision and rest, here are
7 Ways to Make Time for your Purpose
1 Take time with God.
Now this may seem like a given, but if it was common knowledge, then more people would be doing it. I said this in a prior post, but you can’t try to figure out a purpose that’s not even yours to begin with. Your life and your purpose have a SOURCE. And if you don’t spend time with The Source, then how do you expect to operate in His purpose for you? If you find yourself too busy or occupied to spend time in His word and prayer DAILY, then it may be time for a retreat. You can do this with my free 21 Days of Prayer Journal, or a 30 Day Bible Challenge, or just a weekend dedicated to prayer. There are countless, FREE resources that you can use to take some time to spend with God.
2 Take time to DETOX & Rid Yourself of Negative People & Thoughts.
It’s time to finally create the environment you need to grow & thrive! And negative people and thoughts have no place to wreak havoc in your life. For some of you, it’s time to finally get rid of those “frenemies”. It’s time to separate yourself from those who don’t mean you well… are critical towards you… throw shade towards your progress… you don’t have time to fuel that dysfunction!
& that may cause loneliness, but you MUST protect your peace. For some of you, it’s not PEOPLE you need to get rid of… It’s your own thoughts that you need to make submit to TRUTH. You’ve been downing yourself for too long, and that’s why you’re not moving forward. Take a week/weekend/ or a season to literally DETOX your life.
3 Take Time to Reconnect with your PRESENT Life.
Have you been slacking on your present responsibilities because you’re striving so hard to get to your future calling? Have your friends and family been neglected by your grind? Has your current school or work duties taken a backseat to you trying to get to the next big thing?
We must always look and work towards our future, but we must understand that we are living in our purpose TODAY. Your TODAY has a purpose. That job that you hate has a purpose. That boss or teacher that drives you insane has a purpose. And if we aren’t faithful in the NOW, we will just be running in circles. So, reconnect with your present life. Call up that friend you haven’t talked to in a while & have dinner. Go visit & check on that family member. Take some time this week to get your work duties back on track.
We must find the PURPOSE in our PRESENT.
4 Take Time to Get Inspired & Connect with New People.
It’s time to finally pick up one of those books that you have on thatBooks to Read in 2018 List. It’s time to actually sign up to go to a personal development conference. Or go to a networking mixer in your city. Creativity comes from inspiration! You will never find your purpose within your own mind & strength locked up in your room. Take time to go out and explore life and allow different experiences to inspire you!
5 Take Time away from Social Media.
I truly think that many of us know we need to take a break from social media. When a whole day is wasted scrolling through other people’s lives, we know in our heads that’s not right. But somehow, we think that if we take a break from it, we’ll be missing out on life.
Or if I’m not posting about my life, then people are going to think, “I’m not doing anything with myself”.
But, the reality of it is…. They probably won’t care. Yeah, I know that’s harsh…
But don’t allow your “followers” ONLINE to dictate how you spend your REAL life.
If you’re an influencer or if social media is a big part of your business, you’ll be creating way better content from a WHOLE you, than a DEPLETED you.
For others, social media is simply fueling your struggles with comparison. You’re allowing social media to tell you what you should be doing and where you should be.
So, even if it’s only for 7 days, just delete the apps, and see what happens.
6 Take Time to Create.
Some of you have been wanting to start the podcast, write the book, start the Youtube channel or blog… but you can’t seem to find time to actually start working on it. Maybe meaningless relationships occupy your time, a lack of confidence that it could actually succeed, or it could just be laziness that’s standing in the way. So I encourage you to take a weekend or even a Saturday to go to the park or a local coffee shop, and just work on your next project. For me personally, I really want to make The Rough Draft a priority and spend more time writing and expanding it beyond a blog, but I haven’t found time to do it. So for the month of April, that’s something I’ll be working on!
7 Take Time to Love on Yourself… Learn about Yourself… & Improve Yourself.
It’s time to take the necessary steps to get your confidence back. To learn why you are the way you are. Take a weekend to just self-reflect. Take a weekend to treat yourself to a massage or a mani/pedi. Take a month to workout consistently and improve your physical health. Do a 30 Day confidence challenge where you can read a Bible verse every day about what God says about you. If you can’t learn to love yourself, then you can’t truly serve other people with your purpose. It’s not selfish to focus on YOU.
Again, a WHOLE & CONFIDENT version of you can do way more than a DEFEATED you.
Of course, There are other things you can do during your time away such as travel or pick up a new hobby, the options are really limitless…
But even in your time away, it’s important that you still be intentional.
Whether it be…
This weekend I’m going to spend time writing & I’m going to commit to writing X amount of pages…
Or over the next 30 Days, I going to focus on my physical health & plan to lose 5 pounds..
Again, a purpose-filled rest or retreat doesn’t mean you’re just chilling. Taking time away allows you to work towards improving yourself and the world around you.
Don’t limit a time of retreat to the beginning of the year.
Because I’m sure for some of you… those New Year Resolutions have long gone.
& I’m not judging because I have been the same way this year.
I’ve realized that I was doing a lot of STUFF… but it wasn’t lining up with what I originally set my goals to be for this year.
So trust that I’m working this thing out WITH YOU.
Have you ever taken a season of rest?
